Usually, acupuncture therapy is given in combination with other therapies. Acupuncture involves inserting very fine, stainless steel, sterile, disposable needles into specific points to stimulate your body’s natural healing ability. Our bodies naturally distribute energy or life force (Qi) along 14 main meridians or pathways. We become unwell when the flow of this life force is obstructed. This can be due to any number of reasons including heredity, environment, stress, diet, exposure to toxins, injury, strain, lack of sleep, etc. Despite all that our bodies endure we all have experienced our bodies?ability to heal. Acupuncture stimulates the flow of this healing life force that exists in all human beings.
When you receive acupuncture treatment you can expect to feel a slight sensation as the acupuncture needle is inserted. The needles are very fine, stainless steel, pre-sterilized and disposable. Some people may feel a slight sensation when the needle is inserted. Once the needle is introduced some people experience a tingling sensation or a heavy feeling. These are considered good sensations, reflecting the effectiveness of the treatment. Now you can lay back, breathe deeply, and relax on the massage table for 30-60 minutes. Dr. Zhao will periodically check on you and make any adjustments.
While you are in the therapy room, Dr. Zhao may introduce moxibustion therapy, transdermal herbal therapy, cupping, or massage. As well, herbal medicines may be prescribed for your treatment in addition to information about diet and life-style for your particular body type. You may be counseled to receive a series of treatments depending on your particular situation.
You may be at a point in your life where you want to choose to make Diet and Lifestyle changes. Dr. Zhao can provide you with therapeutic support to make these changes. Acupuncture/acupressure therapy can help reduce cravings for sugar, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. A diet including plenty of fresh, lightly- steamed vegetables, fish, rice, and fruit will help to support your lifestyle changes. Dietary precautions for your individual circumstance may be prescribed. Please talk to Dr. Zhao if you need support in this regard.
If your goal is to achieve a healthy well-balanced state and to maintain that state, you will likely want to have a Series of Treatments. Our bodies take time to respond to treatment and to establish a balanced state. Most people experience three phases of healing response whereby their natural healing function or Zheng Qi will become strengthened and dispel disease and blockages.
The first phase of healing is the ‘response phase?to the therapy. Most people will feel a lot better after three to five sessions, though, some may initially feel worse. Everyone is unique and will heal at an individual pace.
After the initial ‘response phase?people experience a ‘balance phase?whereby dis-ease may flare up off and on. During this phase, the body works to establish a balanced state of Yin and Yang energies, Qi and blood. Your body’s ‘balance phase?will depend on your age, gender, emotions, rest, work, nutrition, lifestyle, and so on. This phase of acupuncture usually occurs for a period of five to ten sessions.
A third phase you will experience after acupuncture and Chinese medicine therapy is the ‘stabilizing phase? When your pain or disease has subsided you will want to continue to feel well and healthy for a long time. It is important to give your body the chance to stabilize in a healthy and balanced state. In this phase of treatment, it is suggested that you come in once or twice monthly to maintain a balanced and healthy state.
Please do not hesitate to discuss the options for your treatment plan with Dr. Zhao. Treatment packages are available at a reduced cost. Some supplementary insurance plans provide coverage for acupuncture and massage therapy or offer extended coverage for an additional fee. Claims on Workers?Compensation are covered.
